About the Series

A spirited, three-week gathering to explore the remarkable world of oaks through creativity, observation, and playful making. Together we’ll open Twelve Oak Windows — small guided prompts that celebrate oak ecology, oak-inspired art, and the cultural stories woven through this keystone species.

Oaks support more forms of life and more fascinating interactions than any other tree genus in North America.
— Douglas W. Tallamy, The Nature of Oaks

No tree has been more useful to human beings than oak.
— William Logan, Oak: The Frame of Civilization

Each week we’ll explore a different oak theme, touching on birds, acorns, buds, bark, insects, and winter shelter. Our two-hour sessions give us time to fill our journals together, share throughout, and enjoy two short oak-stretching breaks.

Optional reading: The Nature of Oaks: The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees by Douglas W. Tallamy.
If you’re looking for something more poetic, I also recommend The Oak Papers by James Canton — a moving read full of oak wisdom, written from a UK perspective with less of a naturalist focus.

What Is Nature Journaling?

Nature journalling is a creative way to slow down and pay attention — a blend of observing and capturing through writing, drawing, simple mark-making, and photography. You can journal from a windowsill, backyard, balcony, local park, or any green space near you.

This is a practice grounded in curiosity and gentle noticing, supported by a warm and welcoming group.

What You’ll Need

A simple, accessible setup:

  • A nature journal

  • Loose sheets for rough work

  • Pen and pencil

  • A few favourite art supplies to add colour
(coloured pencils, markers, or simple watercolours)

  • A clipboard or firm surface so you can journal away from your table

  • A few fallen oak leaves collected from a nearby oak

You’re encouraged to find any oak species near you to visit during the series.

Twelve Oak Windows

Each week you’ll receive a small four-prompt booklet to inspire you as you complete your Twelve Oak Windows. Think of it as filling a tiny oaky curiosity cabinet — gentle invitations to notice, wonder, and create. Many of these prompts will be explored together during our sessions.

While there is no formal homework, you’re invited to visit a nearby oak between sessions and use the techniques we practise to fill your nature journal at your own pace — even 10–15 minutes a day can deepen your sense of connection.
